Glad you also thought the book was valuable, Lisa. I have at least one used copy, older edition, in my library. I did not know that it was held is such high regard; glad to know that. Thanks for the feedback. LL Posted by: editor<http://theruminant.ca/author/editor/> on Jan 4, 2012 | 3 I’ve got a decent bit of content lined up to post. I've always found Fukuoka's no-pruning concept fascinating. I think there are a few things to consider before applying this strategy across the board. One, I don't think Fukuoka was pursuing the maximum yield fallacy and Whole Foods fruit quality. And two, I think most of the trees he was growing were seedlings, not grafts (I could be wrong about that, but I have heard this from several different sources). I figure pruning starts with the graft and from then on out the tree would...

A 300-square-mile portion of the Pine Island Glacier is expected to break off in the next few months, creating a massive Antarctic iceberg. The glacier is contributing the sea-level rise.
I have some friends that volunteer at an elephant sanctuary, and when they found out that I had an interest in sustainability, they asked if I could give them some general advice on how to improve things at their foundation. Although I cannot find much on Google that refers specifically to role of elephants in permaculture, I have already started collating interesting material, and I am now looking at it from a permaculture perspective. I have a week to think about this before I go and...
Frances, I'm thinking of the windswept prairies where some of the apple trees Johnny Appleseed planted are still alive, and still producing. Others never did produce. I'm thinking of how strong that root stock is and how one could think of future generations by casting seeds in a zone 4 area and letting whatever grows, grow, so that the root stock, strong and fully adapted to the environment, could be used for highly productive scions. I'm thinking, that we need to take up less space, not...
How interesting Lawrence! This was one of my textbooks when I was in Ag school several decades ago. I thought it was good then, and still do, and still have it. This chapter explores details behind the phenomenal increase in global crude oil production over the last century and a half and the implications if that trend should be reversed. I document that a key feature of the growth in production has been exploitation of new geographic areas rather than application of better technology to existing sources, and suggest that the end of that era could come soon. The economic dislocations that historically followed temporary oil supply disruptions are...
